Where to go in late October/early November

We're planning a trip to Europe in late October/early November. We're interested in the Balkans but are also aware that we're going to be there at the tail end of the shoulder season and into the off season. I've read that things close down in a lot of towns and the weather will be getting colder. That brought my attention to Greece, where things will still be closing for the off season, but might be a bit warmer. We've never been to this part of Europe, and will have a blast either way. What do you, the experts, think will make for a more enjoyable trip?? Also, if you could give me some recommendations for places to go/things to do this time of year that would be great! Thanks!

Rob Greece has had a succession of warm autumns for the last few years (although there are no guarantees!) Obviously the further south you head the warmer it is likely to be, so Crete is a good bet. A flight from Athens to Crete takes an hour and is relatively cheap. The mainland is likely to be less sunny but still very pleasant at that time of year. Depending on time / money / your interests you might like to look at a couple of days in Athens, a trip to Nafplio from where you can visit Mycenae and Epidavrus, and then a flight to Crete to visit Chania and Rethymnon. Reading that I wouldn't mind doing it myself! Cheers Alan
