The cheapest and most convenient way to obtain local currency is your debit card at a local, bank owned ATM. If carrying US cash you only choice is an exchange bureau but be prepared for fees in the range of 10% or more. Exchange bureaus tend to be in touristy place and sometimes associated with Internet cafes and/or phone banks. Cannot miss them as they advertise well. The local TI will have good map and you will have to pay for the better ones.

For the map, I suggest getting one ahead of time, either on-line or a major bookstore. They usually carry Michelin Maps of Europe which should fit your needs. I will second the recommendation of using ATMs, though in Slovenia you will use the Euro.

Currency exchanges are major rip-offs. There is no reason to use them, as you can always buy some extra food or a souveneir. Use ATMs in all countries - Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Slovakia, BiH, all have banks with ATMs.

As to maps, we went to a local bookstore in the US. Maps are easy to find. We bought a planning map of Europe, an atlas, and we were set.
