What to do at the end of the Adriatic trip

We are taking the Rick Steves Adriatic trip in June. We have about a week to spend after the trip is over and are wondering what we should do. Would it be better to spend the time near where the tour ends or fly or train somewhere that provides better access back to the states and spend time there? Thanks for your suggestions.

Mary - Hey we're on this tour too. We're trying to figure out our itinerary also. We've thought about Prague, but transportation is difficult and expensive between Prague and Croatia. We start in Ljubljana and end in Dubrovnik. So I'm interested to see what you hear.

With a week at the end, I'd spend an extra day or two in Dubrovnik and then head to Italy. An all-day tour into Montenegro is worth considering. Leaving Dubrovnik, you can either take an overnight ferry to Bari or fly to Rome. If you wanted to remain in the area, you could spend a few days in the resort town of Budva, Montenegro or be really adventurous and head further down the coast to Albania.

Ljubljana is a great city for a pre-trip visit. Stay in the Pedestrian Walk area for a few nights. (Check RS books for suggestions.) We spent only one night at the end of The Best of Eastern Europe Tour and one pass-through on the way to Lake Bled. A day trip to Lake Bled is a must see! And you can compare Krem Snita (Quality Calories) at Zvezda in Ljubljana and at one of the open lake-view cafes in Lake Bled.
Have fun. I believe you will see Plitvice on your tour...A WOW experience.

I would suggest a few days in Dubrovnik and area. How you are flying home might determine where you spend the remainder. For example, we flew from Dubrovnik to London on a cheap flight, spent some days in London and then flew back home. Just a note that there is no rail service from Dubrovnik north to Split.

Tricia--Would it be hard to get back to Ljubijuana? We fly in there and I guess could fly out of there if it was reasonably easy to get back there from Dubrovnak> Thanks for your help. Mary

Mary,
it would be easy if there are flights from Dubrov. or Split to Ljub. or to Zagreb (and then train to Ljub). Or you could rent a car from Dubrovnik to Rijeka and then train to Ljub. Otherwise it's possible (maybe not the easiest depending on your comfort level with independent travel) to get to Ljubljana. You could take a bus from Dubrovnik to Split (4 hours) and then train from there or ferry from Split north to Rijeka and then a 2.5 hour train to Ljub. But this is covering basically a similar route to your tour.
