Are you driving a car or taking public transport? That will determine how you can plan the interim. Schedule at least 2-3 days for Prague. Vienna is worth the same, Salzburg can be visited in one day, Innsbruck is worth a half-day stop, unless you want to head up to the mountains. We'll be going to South Tirol (now in Italy) because in the past we only traveled through this fascinating area, but now we want to visit and hike around the Bozen=Meran corridor. Transportation to Venice is frequent from Innsbruck, but you have to transfer at Verona (also worth a stop - has a coliseum and was home to Romeo & Juliet). Start planning!

We are not sure if we should go by train or car. If we travel by car we would pick the car up in Prague and drop off in venice.
If you have travel this area, what would you recommend as areas to visit. We want to maximize our time For sure Prague, vienna and Hallstatt but I'm unsure about going east to budapest or west and hit one or to areas Alps? and Italy. Im traveling with my son 22 and daughter 17. need help We are taking a cruise out of venice for 7 days

If your objective is to focus on eastern european cities, then Ljubljana and Lake Bled in Slovenia would be good choices. You could even consider including a coastal town like Pirin. Train connections from Slovenia to Venice aren't the fastest, but they are inexpensive and pretty easy.

Both trains and cars have their ad/disadvantages. Car: gas will be $8/gal or so. You have a ways to travel. And there is the rental cost - you want to drop the car off in Venice, so you better go with an intl. co.
On the other hand, you can see more places, stop in interesting areas, and experience Europe as it should be: on the ground.
Train - much cheaper per mile, and doesn't get lost (many overseas tourists carry GPS these days). You will miss out on some areas, unless you take public transport or rent a car to these.

May I suggest general route: Tabor, Ceske Budejovice/Budweis (incl. Hluboka castle), Cesky Krumlov, for starters. Linz if going south to Salzburg and Innsbruck. Brno if going to Vienna. You can go south to Venice via Graz, but you'll miss Salzburg and Innsbruck.

From Innsbruck take the route through gorgeous South Tirol and then to Verona and Venice; by car you can take the Gt. Dolomite Road to Cortina and then south to Trento. Time to get a map!
