Warsaw to Prague

My husband, 19 year old daughter and I are staying two nights in Warsaw (in June 2012) and then have 1-2 days before our reservations in Prague. We are interested in seeing a smaller town in Poland that is less touristy but don't speak Polish. Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on interesting things to do, see for a 19 year old?

Wroclaw might be a good option. European tourists tend to visit more than Americans, but in any case it is smaller and walkable and parts of it are quite lovely. I don't know how you are traveling between Warsaw and Prague, but I'm guessing a stop off in Wroclaw would be fairly convenient by train. Warsaw, Prague, and Wroclaw (formerly Breslau) have hundreds of years of history, much of it glossed over in US schools. What you will see in all 3 cities could be very moving and dramatic, even for a 19 year old American....if you know the history. For example, the area where the Velvet Revolution rallies were held in Prague, along with the memorial to the young patriot who chose self-immolation, moved me to tears, perhaps because I'm old enough to remember these events. I'd suggest a quick history course, perhaps made faster and easier with novels and movies. I also speak no Czech or Polish other than a few phrases I've memorized. No problem. In fact, my default strategy when I needed translation was to find someone your daughter's age because English has been a required subject in Polish schools for a number of years.

Hi, I agree that Wroclaw(Breslau) is a good choice if you want to stay in the general direction of Warsaw-Prague.
It's also an university town. In 2005 I went to a small town (not the big cities this time as in Krakow, Warsaw, etc) to spend a few days ...Torun (Thorn an der Weichsel). From Berlin changed at Poznan (Posen) for the train to Torun. Definitely not frequented by anglophone tourists. Very nice and a historical place on the Vistula, slower tempo. You may want to consider it if you don't mind deviating from the general Warsaw-Prague route.

We are traveling by train. thanks for the input so far. It helps so much to narrow down the choices.
