warsaw layover

We have a layover in Warsaw next week and are interested in seeing a little of the city and having dinner. There are four of us (two adults and two teenagers). Any suggestions? Do you need a guide or is it possible to take a taxi or public transportation?

Hi Marli, How long is your layover? You can wander around and see most of the "old town" and the "new town" (which is also old though they were both rebuilt after WWII) in a couple of hours; you could easily spend more time there, but you can get the feel in two or three hours. Depending on how much time you have, you could also visit the monument to the Warsaw Uprising and/or the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes (the Jewish Uprising), both very moving. You could stroll down the Royal Way or take a cab to Lazienki Park and Palace. Try to get a close look at the Palace of Science and Culture. You'll certainly be able to see it from a distance, but the artwork on the facade is interesting.

The layover is about 8 hours. We'd like to walk around, see some historical sites and have dinner. I see mixed information on taking taxis or buses.

Don't pass up the chance to wander about the old town. You can even take a bus from the airport.
