Vist to Krakow

We will be visiting Krakow soon and are interested in visiting 3 places: Auschwitz, the Salt Mines and Pope John Paul's hometown, Wadowice. We were planning to visit these locations on our own, without a tour. Can anyone tell me if thery have done this before and if so what transportion is available and at what cost.

Don't know about Wadowice, but you can access both Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine by either bus or train. The locals told us the bus was best for Auschwitz and the train for Wieliczka, so that's what we did. Both trips were easy and very inexpensive.

For Auschwitz, go to the bus station (located next to the train station), and ask for a ticket to the "Auschwitz Museum". Board the next bus to "Auschwitz Museum", take the bus to the last stop which is the bus company's dept located across the street from the camp.
The salt mines are located just outside Krakow in the suburbs. There is an expressway that links the city center to the mines, so it's a very quick journey by taxi: http://tinyurl.com/787yuj2

I know most people do the bus to Auschwitz. My wife and I did the train. She wanted to make sure there was a bathroom to use. It does leave you about a 20 minute walk from the train station. You could take a taxi but walking was fine for us. We walked to Auschwitz II also. We left about 8:30 from Krakow and returned by train about 3:30. There were later trains if needed.

Main problem with taking the train is that the schedules are designed for commuters. Meaning there are lots of trains in the morning to the camps and lots of train in the evening back to Krakow, but almost nothing in the middle of the day when most folks are ready to head back to Krakow. The bus offers more flexibility.

Hi George, Don't forget to visit many of the John Paul II related sites in Krakow such as Wawel Cathedral and Jagiellonian University. As for costs, buses are very reasonable. I used to live in a little town just a little closer to Krakow than Wadowice (though in a different direction), and bus fare was less than dollar. (That was about six years ago) Below is a link to a great guide to Poland - here specifically is the page devoted to John Paul II. http://www.inyourpocket.com/poland/John-Paul-II_70192f Have a great trip!
