we've been there before and want to go back to Jerusalem; where else might be interesting? did the Dead Sea and Masada. Tel Aviv too big and touristy on the coast - maybe Netanya?
Josie: I think you'd get responses if you took your question to a board not dedicated to European travel. I've been to Israel (and adored it) but really can't offer any advice. Well, I could suggest that if you do go back to Jerusalem, there is a great small hotel in East Jerusalem, owned by a Lebanese Christian family, that we had the good luck to stay in. It was called (oddly enough) Jerusalem Hotel and it's one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed in. Getting a taxi to go from west Jerusalem to the hotel in East Jerusalem was sometimes a bit of a problem, but after an interrogation by the driver (yes, really) he would agree to take us.
Have you stayed on a kibbutz? If not, do. In the meantime, a good guide book will help you.
Josie: If you liked Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, then Netanya may not be what you're looking for--at least when I've passed it on the bus from Haifa to Jerusalem, Netanya looks like a beach resort but I've never stopped there. Maybe the Sea of Galilee area would be of more interest to you? Kefar Nahum (it was spelled Capernaum when the New Testament was translated into English) is just one of many fascinating places there; also Nazerath, on the way to the Sea of Galilee if coming from Haifa, a fascinating Arab town with lots of New Testament history, of course. And for connections with the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, how about Har Megiddo (Armageddon in the English translation of the Hebrew Bible).
You could try Eilat - maybe a little too touristy for you - but on the coast and hot. Also, from Eilat, Petra and Wadi Rum are quick hops away in Jordan and no issue crossing the border. Obviously, you will want to have a full day in Petra so an overnight some where in Jordan.
You can also cross to the other side and head to Amman and Madaba in Jordan - visit Bethany on the Jordan, Mt. Nebo, and Jerash.
Acre (near Haifa) is a UN World Heritage Site...the old town is a treasure...much to explore and do.
I was going to suggest Eilat, it's a lovely town. Also consider Haifa, which I also found awesome! Israel is such a great place and I hope you have a fabulous time!
I would go to Greece :)
