Vienna to ??

We are taking a River cruise this fall departing from Budapest. We are meeting friends in Bratislava for 3nights and spending 2 nights prior to the cruise in Budapest, Do we go to Prague, Slovenia or both? We have 6 days on our own. My husband likes the freedom of a car but the train may make more sense in this case. We could also visit other areas in Hungary.

Your posting does not make clear your time period, where you'll be arriving in Europe, and where you'll be departing from in Europe. You're heading says "Vienna to ??" but your text does not mention Vienna OR what direction your trip will take. Prague is NW of Vienna, but Slovenia is SW of Vienna. Obviously, you can get to each place, but, I fear, your plan seems to be all over the map. I might contemplate an arc from Budapest to Bratislava, to Vienna, to Prague. OR, you could go from Budapest to Bratislava, to Vienna, to Slovenia, to Venice. I'd suggest further refinement of your plan. best wishes.

I am not going to argue the virtues of Prague but just look at what I think your schedule is. Bratislava is small and is generally treated as a day or overnight trip. Vienna is an hour from Bratislava by bus, car or train and so Bratislava and Vienna go well together. Vienna to Prague is almost 5 hours by any mode of transportation and in the opposite direction from Budapest. To add Prague you also add at least a day and a half of travel. I am not sure about your plans but i would guess arriving in Vienna, spending 2 days and then going to Bratislava for a day and a half and then maybe taking the hydrofoil to Budapest. Budapest is a good 3 full day visit at a minimum and 4 is better. You also understand that your cruise if it heads north will retrace your path. Now if the question is do you do Prague at the end of the cruise because you are further north and Prague is closer, then sure. Prague can be done in a basic way in 2.5 days. Was I some help?
