Vienna-Prague how to split time

My 19 year-old son and I are travelling to Vienna and Prague this August and will have 9 days, not counting travel days, and I'm trying to determine which city to spend 5 days in and which to spend 4 days. This is his first trip to Europe. We are starting in Vienna, so the first day we will be jet-lagged. The train trip to Prague appears to take 4 1/2 hours.

I would say split the time fifty fifty. First day you'll be jet lagged so don't count it and then you got 4 days in Vienna and 4 days in Prague.

I'd spend 3 full days in Vienna, then see as much as possible on day 4 before taking a late afternoon train to Prague, then 5 days in Prague. Vienna is beautiful, but Prague has more to see and do - and is just as beautiful in a different way. In Vienna, the yellow tourist tram is like a HOHO bus, and a good way to get oriented. Visit Schonbrunn (the Hapsburg summer home) and skip Hofburg (the Hapsburg winter residence). The interiors are very similar but there are more rooms to see at Schonbrunn and lovely gardens.

A few Vienna tips: There are also 2 regular trams that run "around the ring" and allow you to hop on and hop off whenever you see something interesting. They are cheaper than the yellow tourist tram. If you're flying in on Austrian Airlines, hold on to your boarding passes because they give you discounts and free coffees at some places. See http://www.austrian.com/Info/Arrival/MostValuableBoardingCard.aspx?sc_lang=en&cc=AT Some people like to use the Vienna card http://www.wien.info/en/travel-info/vienna-card but if you don't think you'll go to where they give discounts, consider just buying an 8 day public transportation ticket http://www.wienerlinien.at/wl/ep/programView.do/contentTypeId/1001/channelId/-16992/programId/10010/pageTypeId/9083
One punch on it is good for one person for the whole day, so if you punch it twice in one day, both your son and you can ride anything within the core Vienna zone 1 (aside from a regular OBB train) all day. If you're here 4 days, you'll use it up. Also, if you want to save a few more Euros, take the S7 train into Vienna from the airport instead of the CAT. It goes to the same station, just a little slower.

I personally found that Vienna had more to do, but this depends on your interests. Read a guidebook or two and make a list of all the sites/activities you want to do in each place and see which seems to need more time. I also try to have a daytrip option planned in case I find that I allocated more time somewhere than I needed.

Vienna is more grandiose, it used to be capital of a great empire, Prague is more medieval and scenic.

Vienna and Prague are both fantasic and each have their own attraction. Vienna is much cleaner and refined, and I found the food to be much better. Prague, however, has a much more rustic and gritty appeal. Both will be great fun.
