My wife and I recently returned from a similar trip. We spent 2 days in Budapest and 3 in Prague. Depending upon your interests, you could easily see Prague in 2 days but you will probably miss out on some things. We took the night train from Budapest to Prague (appx. 8 hours) and enjoyed it. Not sure of the times but the distance of course is the same. We also spent 2 days in Salzburg and loved it. Sounds like a fun itinerary.

Do you have to go back to Vienna for that flight to Prague? Can you instead go straight from Salzburg to Prague via train? I would think you would save time and money by avoiding that return to Vienna. I just took a quick glance at the train schedule and there were a number of connections that were around 7 hours long.

There is really nothing in Hallstatt other than some very beautiful scenery. There is much more to see and do in Salzburg and Vienna. I would skip Hallstatt and devote more of my extra time to vienna with a side trip to Salzburg for a couple of days. Don't try to do too much.

I agree with Jim. While Hallstatt is a pleasant enough place I would not go there at the expense of extra time in Salzburg. There is just so much more to see and experience in Salzburg. As well, by 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon the town is is shade because the hills behind the town block the sun. I hope this helps.

I couldn't disagree more strongly about Hallstatt. It is one of our favorite places in Austria. If you only want things "to do" then you could eliminate some of the most beautiful places in Europe. You can rent an electric boat and go out on the lake for some beautiful photo ops of the town. The views from the cemetery are also awesome and the Bone Chapel is only one of a few in Europe. Hallstatt is a wonderful place to recharge your batteries and soak up the gorgeous scenery. http://travel.webshots.com/album/579277889nsZFBW?start=72
