Flying in and out of Vienna this summer. Have 12 full days to do Vienna, Budapest, and Prague. Any recommendations for length of stay in each and suggested mode of transport and/or routing in between cities? Thanks to all input.
If you're crossing the boundary of the old Iron Curtain, even today, a train is probably your best bet.
I gave Prague 3 nights, but I could have easily used a 4th.
An even split would work just fine. All these cities need a few days. Trains work well, though I think the travel day to Prague will be a little longer. You might want to return to Vienna at least overnight before flying home (it's a fairly quick trip from Budapest, so Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Vienna might be a good option). We actually like returning to a city - feels more like home the second time around even if it was just a week or so ago.
Do less time in Vienna, and try to go to Cesky Krumlov on way to Vienna. We did this our second time and it was one ofour favorie places in Europe. Trains are my recommendation for traveling to these areas. And its worth the upgrade to go first class from Vienna to Budapest, because its a long trip. We just got back in Sept.
