Using Chase bank card in Turkey

I am about to make my first trip to Turkey. Traveled a lot around other European countries and, for the most part, been able to use my ATM card just fine. During the past year my bank has changed from Washington Mutual to Chase. Not sure if that is even pertinent or not. But my question is this: does anyone have recent first-hand experience using Chase debit card in Turkey? I know ATMs are plentiful, using ATM is simple and usually best option, my bank says it should be fine, etc but i would feel A LOT better if I hear from someone who actually did it. Will be in main areas such as Istanbul, Cappadocia, Fethiye. THANKS

I have Chase cards. While I have never used them in Turkey, I have had no problems using them anywhere in the world including China. As long as you notify Chase of your travel plans, you should have no problems..... they are affiliated with all the major networks.

I have credit union and chase atm cards - used c.u. in turkey in may and june with no problems - had my chase atm card rejected in Ireland only to find out that chase says we did not tell them we were going to ireland - make sure to tell them where and when you are going and then have them repeat it back to you to make sure they have it down correctly and, last but not least, ask for the name of the person you talk to at chase - just in case.

I never had any problems using ATMs in Turkey in the two and a half weeks I was there, and I was using a small local credit union debit card. I figure if that works, anything will work. I am not sure why you are worried - if there was a problem with Chase, I am sure someone would have mentioned it.

Christy, is your local branch convenient?? Then if I were you, I would simply stop by, go to the service desk and WATCH whle the person inputs to your account the info that you will be traveling in Europe (don't restrict it to Turkey). Then ALSO ask that your daily withdrawal limit be raised for the duration of your trip ... usually these banks limit you to $500 per day, which in Euros is under $400. But they readily raise it, to $750 or $1000 if requested. NOT that you expect to pay $750 per day in cash on your trip! BUt this means that you won't have to be seeking out ATMs as often ... less work for Mother. BTW, if you are planning to use a Visa or Masters Credit card to pay for hotels & meals, think about it. Unlike in the US, overseas your credit card charges you 3% of the amount for the act of charging. Thus a $100 room charge costs $3. Well, you may say, I build up points for redemption!! OK, but look at the facts. "Points" for either a cash rebate or reduction of a bill, typically accumulate at a maximum of 1% ... so you lose. Also, landlords etc typically love cash, so y ou might ask, how much is it if I pay cash? You may be surprised... especially in small purchases in stores. I would say, only use CC's if making major purchases such as jewelry or Oriental rugs.

thanks for the replies. i have notified Chase of my travels. Mardee - i was worried because when it was Washington Mutual my card did not work in Portugal. Something to do with the networks. Even though I had called Wa Mu to advise that my travels would be in Portugal, nobody there mentioned it. Needless to say, i was not happy as i was traveling alone and didn't have access to my money.

Here's one more thing you can do: when you contact the bank to notify them about your travel plans, ask for a specific inside line to call collect from abroad if anything goes wrong. Then email that number to yourself. If your card gets rejected, it's a simple matter to retrieve the email and call the bank to have the hold lifted.
