Using a tablet in Slovenia and Croatia

My mom and I have a Samsung 10.1 tablet and would like to use wi-fi throughout our trip using our gps for driving. How can we connect to all the wi-fi spots here and do we have to keep changing wi-fi connections each time we enter a new area? Thanks!

Hi Brendon, Wi-Fi is more suited to stationary situations like being in a hotel or train station. Not really applicable for being on the run and especially not when you're outside major cities. For that you'll need a SIM card but they are hard to come by in Slovenia as Tablets haven't made a major impact yet. The best place we find to get a SIM and top it up is TusMobil (Ljubljana is the best shop). Once you have one they work quite well in the cities but start to play up again once you're in the country but it really depends on where you are. If you have a hire car then hire a GPS. Cheers

Brendon, It would help to have more information on the Samsung Tablet that you're using. For example, is it a Wi-Fi only model, or does it have 3G (cellular) capability as well? If it has 3G, which network are you with? Using the Tablet as a GPS may not be possible. If it's a Wi-Fi only model, it may not work when away from a Hotspot. If it has 3G capability, you'll need to be VERY CAREFUL to avoid expensive data roaming charges. If you have a 3G model, you may want to talk to your cellular network provider about travel packs or whatever. Happy travels!

3G data-only SIM packages are offered by all the major providers in Slovenia, but Tusmobil's is cheapest (and with the worst coverage, I might add). But I would recommend against using your tablet as a GPS as Google Maps requires a constant data connection for navigation and that will mean a lot of data. It is better to either buy an app that allows offline navigation (Navigon is one such app, but very expensive and I'm not sure if available for Android) or arrange for a satnav to come with your rental. Wifi is unfortunately only available in major cities, although you will mostly have to resort to getting connections from nearby cafes. In the countryside you won't find many public hotspots. Most houses have wifi, but they're almost always password protected.
