Just added Skype to my IPad2 with a $20 prepaid card for the minutes. Can I buy prepaid cards in Europe or should I load up the minutes here before I go? Also, what has your experience been using Skype in Europe? Thanks, Mike
I used Skype while living in Athens last year. As long as I had a good internet connection Skype worked well. I didn't use the phone cards, I had purchased a $30 year subscription to make calls to land-lines in the United States. Hope that helps!
Rates are only .03 cents a minute so that $20 should last you a long time. If you do need to add money to your account, you can use your credit card at the Skype website.
I've used Skype many times, in all parts of the world. All you need is an internet (WiFi) connection. If you want to Skype via your iPad to another computer running Skype, you can videoconference (or just talk) for free. Video does require a good wireless WiFi connection. If you Skype out, i.e., use Skype on your iPad to call a phone in the U.S., the cost is 2.3 cents/minute (but you need to have purchased Skype credit before, like it seem that you have). No need to purchase anything in Europe. Your Skype credit is there when you fire up the program.
We use Skype for calls to and from Europe and like it. As long as you have a good wifi connection it works great. Get acquainted with the rate structure, in particular the much higher per minute charge to call a mobile # in Europe if you might be doing that. Be aware of an issue with receiving Skype calls on an iPad - there's no ring tone. So if you're expecting a call you have to watch for it. There's a discussion recently on the West forum and elsewhere on the internet.
