Undiscovered restaurants in Prague???

I have RS book on Prague, but wanted to find out about any other "undiscovered" gems of restaurants in Prague. Good food/beer, preferably outdoor seating or not a lot of smoke and reasonable prices. Either Old Town area or Mala Strana would be best. Thanks!!

Sorry, I can't tell you about Prague (other than it's beautiful and has lots of culture), but I would suggest a side trip to Kutna Hora. Interesting church, but the main "attraction" (not for the squeamish) is the ossuary. The point of my response is that there's a wonderful restaurant in Kutna Hora, downtown where the hotels are. It's a 16th century house that's been restored and not only has great ambience, but serves some of the best food I had on that particular trip to Europe. I would advise trying to obtain some info on line before you go, since it has been a few years since I was there.

I think the mentioned restaurant in Kutna Hora is U krale Dacickeho. Really very good food. I had wild boar and dumplings. Excellent. In Prague I can recommend U Palivce. Good food, good beer, not touristy. It's close to center, in Zizkov. I also like U dvou kocek and U zlateho tygra (Clinton was there with Havel). Actually those two pubs are in Rick Steves book but they are still pretty authentic and more regulars than tourists. U hrocha is one of the most authentic pubs and despite that is right below the castle you won't see tourists there. They have excellent beer. They don't cook, they have only cold food but very good. The pub was shown on Rick Steves Prague TV show. On the same street is another stylish pub U krale brabantskeho. They have warm food and good and very good beer. There are so many gem pubs and restaurants that another good idea would be just to walk around and discover something yourself.

Thank you both. We will only be in Prague two days, so no side trip to Kutna Hora. We have been there before, but only had dinner at U Prince Terrace and some high-end, white table cloth restaurant near our hotel. I am bringing the kids, so I want very casual restauants this time.

u krale brabantskeho is fantastic! tad touristy (b/c its a bit theatric) but way more off the beaten path than most spots..warm medeival setting, great beer and novel setting that you won't forget for a long time. hit it on your walk down after hitting up st. vitus cathedral & the caste.

If you don't get an answer, ask your hotel concierge in Prague the same questions you list here. Many years ago a traveler advised me to ask where a native would eat--not a tourist restaurant.

That has always worked for me. I like to eat where the natives eat. Food is usually better and cost more acceptable.

There is a restaurant on Kampa Island that we liked--family style and very friendly staff. It is right on the water and probably has outdoor dining but we were there in November so it was too cold. It may have been in RS guidebook and I think the name may have had Fisherman in it--there are not many restaurants on KI so this one should be easy to find. No smoke and reasonable prices.

Carl - Don't you think you might be coming across as a bit patronizing when you repeatedly advise people here to Google or ask the tourist information office (or, in this case, the hotel desk clerk)?

I know that I would be offended to have a well-formulated question responded to in such a fashion. I would think maybe you assume I have absolutely no travel skills at all. But perhaps I offend too easily...

Most of the typical beer hall restaurants are filled with smoke. Unless you only want to meet Rickniks, avoid the restaurants in Rick Steves' books. One exception, though, seems to be the restaurant below Pension U Medvidku.

Another restaurant I enjoyed... I can't remember the name of it, but I can tell you where it is. Along the walkway that ascends to the castle, there are several buildings aligned along the wall. One of them is a smallish hotel with a very nice terrace restaurant. You can easily see the terrace as you walk to the castle. The food here is more continental than Czech, but really good.
