Two weeks in Prague

We are planning a trip to Prague next May and intend to spend the entire two weeks in the city, which we hope will give us time to truly explore. I've had friends say this is too long. Thoughts? Thanks! Michelle

It all depends what you want. Obviously you can see main tourist attractions in shorter time. But if you want to slow down and enjoy your experience then go for it. I think Prague is most beautiful in May. Orchards around Hradcany Castle and Petrin Tower are blossoming. In May there is also music festival called Prague Spring. Walk around neighborhoods without tourists, parks. Visit cafes, pubs, wine bars. If you become bored by the big city take side trips to places like Kutna Hora, Karlstejn, Krivoklat, Konopiste, Cesky Krumlov. I would suggest to spend a night in Cesky Krumlov due to the distance.

You didn't ask, Michelle, for a recommendation of a place to stay. We were in Prague in September for a short time, and stayed at the Kozna 6 apartments of Arcadia Residence.
Perfect accomodations, far more than a room, and a great spot for an extended stay in a magical city!

I agree with Alan. I have visted there at least 10 days every year for the last 10 years and still find new things to see and do when I get free time away from the inlaws. You'll have enough time to see things that most folks that blow through Czech Rep don't.

I'd suggest 2 nights in Cesky Krumlov. The place is too charming, there is plenty to see, and lodging is considerably cheaper.

Michelle I think that's a great idea. I've been spending ten days a year there for the last five years and I'm still finding new things to do. As well as the obvious sites Prague has lots of smaller and less central attractions. For example, everybody does Prague Castle but fewer people make it out to Vysehrad, which is only a few metro stops from the centre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vy%C5%A1ehrad It's also a great place just to sit in a cafe and soak up the atmosphere (and beer!) or wander the streets. I generally go in May and later is better for the weather. Choose the last two weeks if you've an option and it will be warm enough to sit out in Letna Park, with it's great views back over the river and the city. If you do plan an overnight trip out I agree that Cesky Krumlov is well worth a visit. Cheers
Alan

I would also suggest, as a day trip to visit Karlstejn Castle which is a few minutes by train from Prague. My daughter has a college friend that is married to a Czech man. Then have a home down the hill from the castle. It is an interesting little village. http://www.hradkarlstejn.cz/home1/ I would also suggest you visit Cesky Krumlov for 2 days. It is also very interesting. http://www.virtourist.com/europe/krumlov/ Enjoy your trip!

Thank you for all your advice - though now it makes me rethink our decision of Prague over Budapest! I think we'll stick with our plan, and include a two-day visit to Cesky Krumlov as part of it.
Best to all, Michelle

Two weeks is not too long. With that much time you will be able to actually start to feel the city for what it is, instead of just doing the mad dash through the tourist traps. I agree with Carol from CA, I would never stay anywhere else other than Arcadia Residence. Pasquale and his family are the best.
