Turkish Bath

My daughter and I are taking the Istanbul tour with Rick Steves and are curious about the turkish bath. Could someone explain the procedure; like what we wear (don't wear) where we put our purses, etc.? We have just never done anything like that and if we need to pack something, we would like to know ahead of time.

My mom and I took the Best of Turkey Tour in October and were thoroughly entertained, scrubbed, and massaged in Antalya (not Istanbul) with 4 other women from our tour group. You don't need to pack anything special. The only material things you need are Turkish Lira and the washcloth. We bought our special washcloths (see Rick's Istanbul tourbook as I can't remember the proper name of them) at the hamam. There were lockers with keys for your clothes. They provided clogs, towels, pestemal and everything else. For ours, we stripped down to panties. We giggled, howled and vowed: what happens in the hamam stays in the hamam. Hope you have fun - it was one of the highlights of our trip.

I went to a Turkish Bath during our Rick Steve's tour last year. We didn't to bring anything extra.. everything was provided. I think there were 9 or 10 of us on the tour that went to the bath together, completely out of my comfort zone but what a hoot! The previous poster said it perfectly, "We giggled, howled and vowed: what happens in the hamam stays in the hamam". You and your daughter will have a wonderful time. Enjoy!
