Turkey Travel Currency Question

Hello Seasoned Travelers!

I am off on a 9-day trip to Turkey and was wondering if you could tell me

1) approximately how much money I should plan to take with me;

2) if I should carry dollars or euros (how much); and last

3) if I should get liras at the airport (how much)

Thank you all for your input.

You need dollars for the visa at the airport when you arrive, and you can get lira from any ATM. Get your lira as you need them.

1- Depends on what sort of budget you have and where you plan on eating. Some places are very inexpensive, others not. Personally, I would plan on $100 a day for two people for food, entrance fees, etc. (not hotel though).

2- I carry dollars and exchange them as I go, or in one lump. It will not be hard to exchange them in any main tourist area. Euros are fine too, if you already have them.

3- I always change a little money at the airport- despite the horrible exchange rate. I use this for transportation, food that day, etc. The one time I did not do this was in Russia, and when I got into Moscow, there were no banks open, no ATM's would accept my debit or ATM cards, and no places took credit cards. I eventually found a questionable money changer down a dark hallway in a train station. At least I could eat something! That's when I learned my lesson.

Enjoy your trip, Turkey is amazing!

Carry $ as a back up to exchange. But otherwise just use an ATM card to withdraw money at the airport. Quite a few ATMs in the arrival hall.

Do remember you will need $20 in US currency for the visa (unless you already have this). If you don't have US$, Euros are also accepted for the visa (15 euros)/

hi
this is Gokhan from Turkey :) istanbul and izmir...
1- average standard lunch or dinner 25-35 TL

1 USD 1.5 TL , 1EURO 2.05 TL

for 9 day 100 USD per day is very well enough excluding lodging

100 TL is well enough to leave from airport by taksi, shutle fees are arround 10 15 Euro to the city centres, It depends time and you may find exchange offices everywhere, airport rates could be worse max. 10%

dont hesitafe for further questions

iyi yolculuklar ve iyi tatiller :)

Thank you for your ideas.

Sorry, I did not make one fact clear. I have booked with a travel agency and everything is paid for for all 9 days except dinner on a couple of days and of course, spending money. I will be getting the visa at the airport. So would I need dollars, euros, or liras for dinner and for spending money. Thanks again!
