I would love to see Turkey this summer. Any thoughts, safety concerns or recent experiences traveling there now with the current
political situations in N. Africa nad Middle East?
If you search for "state department turkey" on one of the major search engines you can look at the travel advisories on the consular information sheet.
My only reservation would be the heat! Turkey's governmental structure and political situation are much different from those countries that are in upheaval. Though no one can make any reliable predictions, political unrest there is pretty unlikely.
Turkey is a democracy and a member of NATO...it's very unlikely that there will be revolution this summer;)
We were in Istanbul and Ephesus (cruise stops) last September..........we were shocked at how wonderful, welcoming, and clean everything was. Thriving areas. Modern mixed with historical treasures. Felt incredibly safe there (and I tend to be a bit of a chicken re: safety). Definitely check the State Department travel advisories for ANY country one is considering these days (their web site appropriately scared me off enough re: Egypt when I was reading it last fall, considering a winter trip....thank goodness). They post good info. I'd go to Turkey again in a heartbeat. Allow a solid 2 days, if not 3 for Istanbul......so much to see.
