Planning a 10 day trip to Turkey in late November, flying into Istanbul. My husband and I are really looking forward to exploring Istanbul and other parts of Turkey. Being so close to Greece we are considering exploring the nearest islands like Rhodes or Samos. But I also heard of Istanbul-Cairo trips. Has anyone done a Istanbul-Cairo trip? Not sure which to do at this point...suggestions please!
In late November I would do Istanbul/Cairo, which I have done, rather than the Greek Islands because they are slipping into hibernation with cool weather. In my opinion, save the Greek Islands for May-Oct. 5 days Istanbul/5 days Cairo would be a really fun trip if 10 days is all that you have for your entire trip. Flights are inexpensive between the two cities and they are both exceptional travel destinations. Weather in Cairo will be pleasant. Do open jaw flight into Istanbul, out of Cairo and check the flights between the two with a site like www.sidestep.com. That flight is running around $220 one way (or $270 RT) for late Nov/early Dec at the moment on Turkish or Egypt Air.
In my mind, the islands aren't really Greece -- save them for a trip to the mainland.
Istanbul and Cairo would be a perfect pairing (both are great), but I've never gone directly from one to the other. Of the three, any part of Greece is way at the bottom of my stack.
