Looking to rent a car and visit this area in late July 2010. To visit Troy, island of Bozcaada, Assos and then south alll the way to Maramis. Can one rent a car in Canakkale? Or you have to drive down from Istanbul or north from Izmir?

I think you probably could rent a car in Canakkale, but most likely you will need to rent from a national chain in order to be able to drop it off in Marmaris. I think I'd be inclined to rent from the Izmir Airport, where there are several non-local car rental chains. Assuming you are starting from Istanbul, why not go to one of the English language travel agencies on Divan Yolu (on the edge of Sultanahmet) and have them find you the best deal?
