I am thinking about going to Turkey from Nov 19th to December 1st. And recently heard that the weather could be snowy and miserable and that a lot of places to visit would be closed. Anyone have any additional information. We were planning Istanbul, Cappadocia and hiking somewhere
Nancy, We went to Turkey in December 2006. We were based in Istanbul. The weather wasn't too cold here. Nothing a good winter jacket can't solve. We got the bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia - now that was cold! Daytime tempature about 3F(-16C) even colder at night & of course you're outside all day. Pack the winter woolies for that! Lots of snow on the way there by bus. We had no problems with sights being closed. Everything we wanted to see was open, no problem. It's a cultural experience, enjoy, especially the Grand Bazzar and make sure to squeeze in a Turkish Bath!
That's pretty much my time frame for travel to Istanbul so I hope you'll get more replies. There is a weather chart in Rick's Istanbul book (p. 329) that states November average temps as being 60 degrees F as high, and 45 F as low, and December 52 F high, 39 F low. So that would be rainy rather than snowy, at least for Istanbul, which I believe has more moderate temperatures than inland. Hiking in the cold rain does not sound so great.
I'm thinking myself about tacking on Ephesus to my Istanbul trip: near the coast but would probably have to take an inland bus to get there.
