Turkey in late December

Hi, am planning a 5 day trip to Turkey for end of December next year (yes, know I'm early - but I like to plan and budget). I would really love to go to Troy and Gallipoli and thought we would fly in to Istanbul to do this. Has anyone been there that time of year? Anyone know what the ferry crossing would be like? Will it be too cold and miserable to enjoy? (We are spending Xmas and New Years in Berlin and hope to have 4 or 5 days in Prague - so looking for slightly warmer weather). Or are we better off going down to Bodrum and exploring ruins down that way - with perhaps slightly better weather? We have been to Antalya and surrounds(about 18 years ago and LOVED it) and thought we should explore a different part of the country.
Any thoughts/suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

We were in Turkey in 2010, on a tour, which included the two places you're considering. I consider Troy to be one of the most disappointing sites I've visited, ever. All that you see is a series of what appear to be stone retaining walls. Oh, I almost forgot, a recently-built wooden horse. My advice is to skip it. While I realize that Gallipoli means more to Australians than to Americans, I was bored by it. A beach and a cemetery, lots of graves. One further downer: I believe that the weather in Turkey at that time of year is likely to be quite cold. Check on one of the weather sites.

Thank you Rosalyn, That is good to know about Troy! What a shame!! Yes, I have looked at weather averages and plan on checking out the day to day temps this December to give me a better idea. I think further south is a BIT warmer.
Did you enjoy Istanbul?
