Turkey / Greece Itinerary Help Needed

Hello all,

My girlfriend and I want to plan a two week holiday for end of August beginning of September 2010. We were thinking of travelling to a number of different places, either in turkey, Greece of both. Would the latter be possible..?

We were thinking of starting in Istanbul and finishing in Athens.. Or would you recommend just concentrating one country? In terms of what we would like...bit of culture, bit of history, great scenery and a couple of days on a beach!

I know it is all a bit vague at the moment, but this is just a starting point. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

You might feel a bit rushed if you try to fit 2 countries into 2 weeks, it all depends on the way you like to travel, how much you want to see in that time and how much you're willing to forego for the sake of a quality (versus quantity) holiday. Both countries have lots to see and do as well as great beaches.

The Greek islands are amazing and several are close to the Turkish border with ferry service accessibility: Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos and Rhodes. From these islands you can then continue on to explore Greece on the way back to Athens.

Get yourselves good guidebooks to help you figure out an itinerary that will work your you based on what you want to do. I suggest T. Cook's "Greek Island Hopping" and the Rough Guides for Greece and Turkey.

Hi Dom,

I asked same question about 1.5 years ago. Based on advice we received, we decided to concentrate on just one country for our 15-day trip last May. It took quite a lot of planning as it was our first visit to Turkey and we were glad that we concentrated on just one country for our trip. We're hoping to travel to Greece sometime in the future.

Do you have Rick Steves' guide books on Istanbul and Athens yet? If not, you should get them and read them. They will provide you with lots of information that can help you make a decision on where to focus you time.

Hi, This is Gokhan from Turkey ;) Istanbul & Izmir
2 weeks could be enough but I am sure you will be in rush :)
You can start from Istanbul (min 3 days/2nights) then you may go to Canakkale from europe side (Troy and galippoli) 1-2 days and you can jump to Asia side in Canakkale and you may visit assos, troya, Akçay, Bergama (oldes library) , Ayvalik , Izmir & Çesme and ephessus (including Sirince villace in Selçuk and virgin mary house)
you may go to Kusadasi for night life and jumt to the Greek islands from Kusadasi, or you can find direct flight to athens from izmir (it takes 1.5 hour) www.flypgs.com www.sunexpress.com.tr

But I recommend you to continue to the Marmaris, Datca and Fethiye for historical and natural places including sun and sea :)
I advise you to visit www.goturkey.com , you can ask for any other further question,
Görüsmek üzere, iyi tatiller
Gokhan

According to the SunExpress website there is NO flight from Izmir or Istanbul to Athens or to any other airport in Greece.

Olympic Airlines, Aegean Airlines, & Turkish Airlines all fly from Istanbul to Athens.

With two weeks, you could easily visit both countries. Just get out your guidebooks, narrow down to 2 or at most 3 destinations in each country, and make your plans.

At the least you have plenty of time to see the highlights of Istanbul & Athens.
