Traveling to Romania

I am seriously thinking about going to Bucharest, Romania in July or 2012 to meet a a friend that lives there. I may be traveling alone and I have never been out of the stated. Is it safe there? I hear there is alot of crime and scams. Any information woud be highly appreciated.

I don't have statistics of crime but I felt safer in Bucuresti than in most American big cities. And yes, be aware of pickpockets and somebody may try some scam but it is easy to avoid it.

What Ilja said. We were there in September, walked all over, took a bus, hung around the train station, and never felt unsafe. We stayed at the Ibis hotel which was convenient to both the train station and the bus station. People in Bucharesti are exceedingly friendly, or at least they were to us. The elegance of the city is sure to impress you.

I traveled there as well as all over Romania and never felt unsafe. It is a beautiful country especially the Transylvania area. If you go all the way there be sure to see the countryside. I traveled with one other woman and we drove all over, then took a train from there to Budapest...all of which worked out perfectly. The people were extremely friendly and I loved the food.

Bucharest is pretty safe, you should be ok. I used the subway for my transportation and it's pretty cheap and fast. the distance between stops is a little longer than other european cities, but not too bad. you can take taxi if necessary, it's pretty cheap and running around everywhere. some drivers don't speak English, so you may want to write down the address you're going to. just like any other big european cities picket pocket can be a problem around train station, tourist area, etc, but if you're careful you'll be fine. in fact, because in romania it's almost legal to discriminate against the gypses, you're less likely to get pick pocketed by gypse kids, because a lot of times they're not allowed to ride bus or train with other romanians and tourists in the same compartment. it's still a developing country, and given you haven't been out of the state, you want to rent a car. some of the buses and trains are not as comfy as you're used to, so just keep your expectation set you'll be fine.
