Given the current fires, I plane to travel to Greece in April 2010, what damage does it appear to date within the special historic area of Athens?

None whatsoever. Any photos you saw that had smoke around athens was blown from 40-50 miles away by the strong Meltemi winds.
Pam, rather than type a whole news item here, I suggest you simply Google "Attika Area Fires news reports" (attika is the very large "county" which includes athens -- and you will get more than enough information. Where the fires took place is not a place you would go to anyway.
