traveling through the Julian Alps in 1st week of May

We are planning a trip to include a drive through the Julian Alps, but have no idea of the snow/weather factor for the first week of May. Anyone know what the road and weather conditions will be? Kathleen

Hi Kathleen! Well no one can predict the weather these days but usually all roads are open. The highest pass in Slovenia is Vrsic at 1611m and that is usually open in April. You will probably still find snow higher than that 1800m up but that shouldnt affect any mountain passes into Slovenia etc. If Vrsic was closed (highly doubtful), you can still use Predel Pass through Italy. The circle route is highly popular starting in Bled - kranjska Gora - Vrsic Pass - Bovec - Kobarid - Most Na Soci - car train back to Bled. Stunning scenery. Kobarid, Bohinj, Bovec, kranjska Gora are all great points to stay and start hikes etc. Cheers

Hi, Last year in Mid-April the Slovenian pass was open and spring flowers were blooming on the ways up. Hiking trails were mostly snow covered. wayne iNWI

Thank you for your information. Another question: how much time for sightseeing along the way should we allow? In other words, we love to hike and would there be some trail that we could hike along the way in first of May? I know the book says the total time straight through would be 5 hours. But those of you who have stopped for pictures or a hike, what is a good time frame to plan?

How many trails do you want to take? They are there. 5 hours is constant motoring. Even the WWI cemeteries take an hour. Get hold of a booklet mapping out the trails along the loop. We stayed outside of Bled a dozen or so miles with Clive and Myra and their very big dog. This couple specializes in providing a great bed and an evening meal to remember. They have kayaks, can set you up for skiing or hiking. Price was reasonable. I am sure a quick Google of their names and the dog will find them. We used their house as our base as have friends that did breath taking hikes. wayne iNWI
