Following the RS Turkey tour in Sept, we'd like to see a little of Greece (or islands)the following week, early Oct.Our flight home is booked from Athens.Any suggestions for a relaxing, scenic few days?Any advice about convenient transportation is welcome too!Is driving a rental car recommended?
I took the RS Turkey tour back in 1991 and spent a little over a week in Greece following completion of the trip. From Kusadasi, I took the ferry to the island of Samos. I spent a couple of days on Samos. From Samos, I then took the ferry to Naxos and spent a couple of days there and then continued by ferry to Santorini and also stayed there a couple of days. I flew from Santorini to Athens and stayed there before returning to the U.S. I had booked my flight from Santorini to Athens prior to my visit, but I just booked the ferries and hotels when I was Greece. Other people on my trip took the ferry to Samos and then flew to Athens before going home.
A lot of the islands start shutting down, tourism-wise, in early- to mid-October. So it would be worth it to pick up a guidebook and see what islands will still be open to tourists during your time. Unless there is some really out of the way place that you want to see, I wouldn't bother renting a car.
Take a look at Matt Barrett's website - travelgreece.com. He is a terrific resource.
Rick has some interesting comments on his Blog dated August 30th.
I highly recommend renting a car and hitting up Delphi and/or heading to a few local destinations on the Peleponnesian peninsula. Possibly Nafplio, hitting Corinth along the way. Swift rental car in Athens is a great place to rent a car. You can take your leisurely time and it's beautiful in that part of Greece. Just spent 9 days there myself earlier this summer.
You also would likely see the effects of the extensive fires that occured earlier this year.
