My family of 4 will be in Croatia,Monte Negro, Slovenia and Bosnia for approx. 5 weeks. We will be renting a car, but I need to know if we should plan to take the car by ferry to Hvar, Korcula and Vis or should we go on as foot pasengers and rent a car after seeint these islands? How difficult is it to travel by car ferry in June and July and how much time do we need to allow for traveling this way?
Cheryl-
I ws there in July and August. We chose to walk on the ferries instead of renting a car. On Vis we rented mopeds for a couple of hours to tour the island. It was a fun day. The island is small but quaint. On another day we did a boat excursion that took us to the blue cave. It was fun to be out on the water, but it is a considerable amount of time in a small boat on the sea.
We then went to Brac, which is one of the larger islands. We stayed in Bol and took a hydrofoil there. It ttok us straight into Bol. When we left, we left out of Supetar (car ferry dock) and took a taxi there. When we toured the island we rented a car for the day.
Something to consider is the travel between islands. You cannot always go from island to island. Rather, you have to go back to Split to catch another ferry to the other island. It takes some planning, but is doable. It is always easier to catch a ferry by foot than car.
How much time are you spending on each island? How old are your kids?
Hi Cheryl,
As I think Paul mentioned, the ferry between islands and the mainland doesn't run every day--I'm attaching a link to the ferry's website--it might be helpful for planning purposes:
Jadrolinija Ferry Line
Thanks for the input, Sharon and Paul. I have studied the ferry schedules and I know it will take advance planning. My worry is that we will have to wait in insufferable lines to board the ferry with a car even with our reservation. My kids are 14 and 17, so that will be easy as far as carrying stuff. I have friends who did this trip in Sept. with a car and had no problem, but it was Sept. There are shorter routes between the islands and the mainland which we can drive if we have our own car. We plan to go to Vis from Split. Paul, how crowded were those ferries in July? Thanks.
Hi Cheryl,
We took the ferry in October and it wasn't crowded--don't know about July and/or July...
