travel trieste to croatia

We will be flying into Trieste (late August)& need to go to Rovinj, where we have hotel reservations. What is the best way to travel? We have an extra night after arrival before we check into our reserved hotel. Can you recommend a hotel in Trieste near airport or other transportation hub? After Rovinj, we are going to Zagreb. Transportation recommendations? After Zagreb, we have about 5 days before we return to Trieste, & fly home. Any recommendations re: how/where to spend this time? We are thinking of going to Split. Thanks

In response to a similar question, Jeff from Bend OR posted the following link for buses from Trieste to Pula (some stop in Rovinj) - http://www.croatiatraveller.com/Istria/PulaBuses.htm.
Best public transportation options to Zagreb would be either direct bus or bus to Rijeka and train to Zagreb. After Zagreb, you could take a train to Split or go to Ljubljana and Lake Bled in Slovenia. If you go to Split, be sure to vist nearby Hvar (can daytrip by hydrofoil) or maybe even spend a night or 2 there.

My husband and I have taken the bus to Rovinj. The bus station is in the train station, outside and around to the left as you are facing the station. The ride is fun and interesting. Be prepared to show your passport as you leave Italy and enter Croatia. Rovinj is beautiful. Be sure to hang out around the square during the evening. Enjoy.

Bus or a combination of bus, ferry. The Slovenian and Italian train lines don't connect, and you would have to take a bus up into the hills to catch a train from there - it's a pain. (And you'd have to route thru Ljubljana pretty much).

I'd suggest bus, or if you want a bit of an adventure, Google some of the ferries that leave from Venice or the Slovenian coast.
