Travel to Uzbekistan (Tashkent, Bukhara, Smarkand) and to Kashgar, Urumpqi,

We have talked with travel planners and have wildly different costs....$6000 is way too much for us. One other for the China part of the trip was very low (that is a little frightening as well)! Recommendations for travel assistance that has worked well for you as you traveled in these areas? thank you, Joan

This is probably not the right forum for this part of the world. You could try TripAdvisor or the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum.

I would also suggest you get a copy of Lonely Planet's Central Asia guidebook - they always list local travel agents that arrange trips.

Have you also considered doing the travel arrangements (flights/hotels) yourself and only relying on travel agents for local sightseeing? You can easily travel between the 3 cities in Uzbekistan on the train. The key part will be figuring out flights that connect Tashkent with Kashgar and obviously getting the visas for these 2 countries ahead of time.

Good luck - I'm envious, having always wanted to travel along the silk road. Hopefully, I'll follow in your footsteps within the next 3-5 years.

When we went to Uzbekistan a couple of years ago, we booked through an Uzbeki travel agency:

We were very happy with the trip they arranged for us. We booked our own flights to Tashkent and they made all of the in country arrangements for a car and driver, guides in the different cities, and hotels. I don't know if they will make arrangements for China or not.
