travel to Kalambaka

Will be going to Kalambaka/Meteora for a few days in May.
Is it easy to get to by train from Athens? Will I need a car there to get around to monasteries? I booked a hotel near village of Kastraki because it was closer to a trail to one of the monasteries, but it is 1 kilometer from Kalambaka. Can't seem to find out if there are a variety of restaurants in this village of Kastraki. Wondering if I should stay in Kalambaka where there might be more choices of restaurants or cafes, etc. to walk in the evening if I don't have a car. But will then have to pay for taxis to go to see the monasteries. Any thoughts/suggestions on this would be appreciated.

We stayed in a hotel on the "main" street in Kalambaka (on a Collette tour). Close to restaurants, cafes, internet cafes, etc. My husband and I took a taxi to one of the monasteries not covered in our tour. It was not expensive, and the taxi driver will wait for your return to take you back to your hotel. Your hotel would probably be happy to arrange for you. Sorry I don't remember the amount, but we thought it was very reasonable.
I'd probably recommend staying in Kalambaka.
