Travel to Eastern Europe

We are traveling to Italy for one week in September and would also like to do some ancestory searching in Kosice, Slovakia. Vienna, Prague and Budapest visits would be wonderful but we only have 8 to 10 days. Is this too much to expect in a trip that short? Can you take a train from Florence, Italy to Vienna and how long? This is what I had in mind: Florence to Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and not sure how far Kosice is or how to get there. I have maps and studying.

According to Deutsche Bahn website it takes about 3 and half hours from Budapest to Kosice with no train change. It seems to me that you want to see too many cities in just 10 days. It is doable but I doubt it would be enjoyable. You can use DB website to find all your connections.

I agree with Ilja. That's way too many cities to see.
This is going to be a matter of what is more important - looking up heritage or going sight seeing. If you are going to keep Italy (fly into Italy) then I suggest taking a low cost flight with Wiz Air (approx 40 - 60 Euro) from Pisa to Budapest. Then stay a day or two in Budapest before hopping the 3 hr train to Kosice. Return back to Budapest the day or so before you have to return to the USA and fly out of Budapest. Even this might be a hectic schedule depending on how used to European travel you are. Look up the Kosice website now to find out where you need to go to do your research and maybe get some contacts there.
