Travel options between Dubrovnik and Athens

Hello, my wife and I need information about flight options as well as other methods of travel between Dubrovnik and Athens. We will be driving down through Croatia in October 2011 and need help from there. Thanks. Ron

The Croatia/Greece connection has always been pretty close to the old Maine joke...."You can't get there from here"....while not quite true, it can be difficult. ,First, you are travelling from Non-EU to EU, meaning there are few if any budget flights, really none from Dubrovnik, maybe a few from Zagreb. There have been some cheap flights, but they involve a connection someplace, easiest would be Fly Dubrovnik to Rome, then Rome to Athens. Others have involved German airports, or even British airports, depending on the budget airline......Ferries are another option, but again nothing direct. The typical route would be Dubrovnik to Bari, Italy....then to Patras, Greece.....Trains again are not a great option, it would probably be a train to Sarajevo then a train into Bulgaria and then into Greece. Now that Albania has opened up a bit, you can take buses and vans to Greece, It is still a little shaky and not really developed routes, but a number of people are now going that route. All in All, lots of options, just not many that are easy or cheap.

I'd recommend you check out * http://www.balkanology.com/overview/article_croatia_to_greece.html * . Also read the * lonelyplanet.com/thorntree * forums. You'll find lots of information about doing this. My husband and I made this trip ourselves last fall. We took a bus to Budva, Montenegro, and stayed overnight; then a tour bus from Budva to Tirana, Albania, and stayed 2 nights; then flew from Tirana to Athens. It was a bit of an adventure!
