Don't believe verything you read on the internet. It is very safe. However, most people around here that have done it recommend against it because the train is old and not very comfortable.

it's pretty safe. just use common sense and keep valuables on you, and know thieves typically act when train is approaching a stop.

I should add that theft does occur on trains. Never leave something valuable out in the open while you walk down the hall to the wc or dining car. But the cabins lock from the inside at night so no one can gas you and take your stuff. That only occured in the old days of common compartments (think Hogwarts Express style compartments). But the theft caution is a general one for day trains, hotels, pick-pockets, cafes... The trains are very safe.
