We will be visiting Prague and Budapest in a few weeks (first timers!). I was a bit shocked at the airfare from Prague...any ideas on a best, more affordable way to get to Budapest? Thank you for any advice!
The train is not a bad way either (but more expensive than a bus), plus you could stop in Bratislava for a night, if you wish.
Just wanted to point out something in Steve's post that may be incorrect, the part about "Or, STUDENT AGENCY can book the Orangeways bus for you."
I believe that Student Agency Bus and Orangeways Bus are two different companies, and that Student Agency does not book bus tickets for their competitor.
My husband and I just returned from a trip that included Prague, Vienna, and Budapest, and we used BOTH companies for some of our travels (Orangeways between Budapest and Vienna, Student Agency Bus for a day trip out of Prague to Plzen). Both companies were similar in services (free coffee drinks on board, free headphones with which to watch the TV entertainment, bathroom on board, etc), and they were very pleasant - and very inexpensive - experiences.
For a long haul such as Prague to Budapest, the train might be a bit more comfortable since you can get up and move around (especially if you are tall), but is likely to be quite a bit more expensive. After riding on the buses of these two companies, my husband and I wouldn't hesitate to use them for longer journeys.
Let me know if you had any questions about either bus company, and I'm happy to share any first-hand knowledge that I can!
Did you try www.click4sky.com? When we went Budapest to Prague last year we flew instead of taking the train or bus because it was actually a lot cheaper. At the time I didn't realize I was actually booking with Czech Air but a discount fare I couldn't get via the Czech Air website direct. It's worth a try if you are still exploring options.
