travel from Istanbul to ... somewhere

We will be starting our summer travels with a week in Istanbul (May). From there we would like to go to Dubrovnik, but a direct flight from IST (preferred) or SAW does not appear to exist. Plan-B would be to go to 'somewhere' (easy to get to on a direct hop) and stay there for a few days (or week if it's interesting) and then from there to Dubrovnik. If you have made this kind of indirect journey to get to Dubrovnik we would like to hear your experiences/suggestions. Thanks!

Hi Keri,

If I were in your position I'd look at a site like Which Budget.com to see what cities you can fly to easily and inexpensively from Istanbul. You may see something on the list that interests you as a destination on your way to Dubrovnik.

Our trip to Dubrovnik left from Budapest, then we took the train to Ljubljana (which I highly recommend). From there we took the train to Zagreb and flew to Dubrovnik on Croatia Air.

Thanks, Sharon. We've been getting some good leads using the link you provided.

Croatia Air seems to have an expensive lock on flights into Dubrovnik. I wonder if there is some other reasonable way to get to Dubrovnik from (say) Italy -- a ferry?
