After spending a week in Florence with family (mid october) my husband and I would like to spend a few days in Slovenia ...should we take the train to Trieste? And then what is the best way to rent a car in Slovenia? How do we travel to Ljubljana or do we rent near the border? Thanks very much for any suggestions.
Hi Donna! You will love Slovenia! To get there you could rent a car from Florence and drive although the off charges may be expensive (depends where you are leaving from?) You can also take the train to Venice or Trieste and then take a GoOpti transfer to Ljubljana for example with very reasonable rates: http://www.goopti.com/index.php?option=com_transfer&lang=en&affid=7 Otherwise it gets messy (Trieste to Sezana, train to Ljubljana or train from Venice to Gorizia, to Nova Gorica and then bus to Ljubljana) There are no direct connections to Slovenia unfortunately. There are no rental agencies near the border so you are best to go to Ljubljana. We recommend ATET in Slovenia as they are the best for customer service www.atet.si Once in Slovenia, you must explore Ljubljana, Lake Bled and the Soca Valley. For more info you can check out www.sloveniaforyou.com There are also the Caves and Lipica to explore and the wineries of Goriska Brda. Have a great time

Dear Greg, thank you for your prompt response. I am not familiar with GoOpti...from Trieste. Is this a tour service, a bus or a car... To Ljubljana?
Hi again! If you use the link we provided it pretty much explains everything. They are a transfer company using shared minivans at great rates. http://www.goopti.com/index.php?option=com_transfer&lang=en&affid=7 Just put in where you want to go and then fill out the other details and you get a rate. A GoOpti fare has a waiting window of 2-4 hours while a VIP fare departs at the time you determine. Its very popular around Slovenia now. Here's some great videos of Ljubljana and Bled to show you how beautiful Slovenia is! http://vimeo.com/39444702 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4WUDO5uAUf8 Let us know if you need help with the finer details, we're glad to help.

Would just like to add to Greg's advice that there is also a direct bus line running between Florence and Ljubljana, operated by Florentia Bus: http://www.florentiabus.it
Thank you both for the great suggestions....we are thinking now that we will take the train to Venice and then GoOpti directly to Ljubljana and skip Trieste to give us more time in Slovenia. Greg, are you a tour guide?
