Travel from Fethiye to Capadoccia region

I am REALLY trying to figure this out on my own but having some difficulty. Can someone share any suggestions about getting from Fethiye to Capadoccia? It doesn't seem there are any direct flights from one region to another. Would bus or train be better? More concerned with duration (shorter is better) than cost at this point. THANKS!

Taking the bus is a very easy and comfortable way to go. You get a full day in Fethiye and wake up in Cappadocia. I took a dolmus from the downtown to the otogar on the fringe of the city and purchased a ticket for a bus that left about 7pm or so. The bus was very modern and the seats were plush. They even had snacks and drinks served. The bus travels through the night with a few stops on the way for breaks. I usually don't sleep much on planes, etc. but I was able to sleep quite a bit and woke up refreshed as the sun was coming up in Nevshehir. The sky was filled with colorful hot air balloons as we disembarked. What a treat! From there we boarded another quick bus to Goreme, a magical village. The Cafe Safak is a good place to eat, owner Ali is a gracious host and reliable source of information. While in Fethiye I was in a quandry like you are and luckily I met a wonderful family that owns a small carpet shop there, Mustafa and Huriye Koca--and son Ibrahim. We became friends and they told me what to see and do in Fethiye and how to get to Cappadocia (they are from Kayseri). Their shop is in the main tourist pedestrian shopping area. Stop by and say hello ([email protected]) if you want to connect with some kind locals who speak good English. Fethiye is a real fun place with a relaxed attitude. There is no pressure or hustle and the people are easygoing. The seaside promendade is one of the best I have ever seen. turkeytravelplanner.com is a great resource.

Just in case Antalya is on your itinerary. We took an overnight bus from Antalya to Goreme and it's just as Rich described it. Very comfortable, fun snacks and frequent stops (about every 2 hours) for bathroom breaks along the way. We took a couple of longish bus trips on 2 different bus lines in Turkey but Kamil Koc was our favorite. Arriving early in the morning to see the hot air balloons floating over the city is a memorable site!

As always, the Board comes through! Thanks so much for the replies.
Rich - do you happen to remember which bus company you went on? Is this something to make reservations for or just show up and get on the next bus?? I will research more online about the bus b/c quite honestly, for the Fethiye to Capadoccia journey I had simply looked into flying. Thanks!

In both cases for our long distance trips, the receptionist at the hotel helped us make our bus reservation and I think that we were able to get a better routing than we would have figured out on our own. The buses were pretty full so I would suggest making an advance reservation for a long distance trip.

I was traveling in late September and bus seats were easy to get for me, so your travel dates will impact on how quickly you need to lock in your reservation. I used Nevsehir and Suha bus companies going to and from Cappadocia--both were good. I did a quick look on the Turkish Airlines website and just put in some random summer dates to fly from Fethiye (Dalaman Airport is closest-50km/30miles) to Kayseri or Nevsehir in Cappadocia and it's about a 4 hour flight including a quick layover in Istanbul. Some days were a good deal, others not so much. Once again, a lot depends on your travel dates. Personally, I enjoyed the night bus ride--to my surprise. It was an interesting adventure.

Long haul busses in Turkey are really a treat--Greyhound could learn a lot from them! Just watch out for the bus attendants who will squirt you with lemon cologne if you don't speak up to decline it!
