Travel from Dubrovnik to Salzburg

We will be finishing a Rick Steves tour in Dubrovnik in October and then need to get to Salzburg. What is the best method of travel? Looks like buses and trains can be tricky. Should we fly? Thanks.

The bus/train combo will take a very long time. I would fly. It's probably cheaper to fly into Vienna and take the train from there to Salzburg. I can find a flight in mid-October for $162 flying Dubrovnik to Vienna via Cologne. 6 hrs. total, but still a whole lot faster than trains or bus. And you could make a short stop in Vienna-always a plus in my book!

Try flying to Munich, then a short train or bus to Salzburg.
Ciao.

o.k, flying is faster and more convenient. The question is if you have enough time and if you would like to see more in the country. In this case, you have two options. 1) From Dubrovnik take a bus to Split. In Split you can catch any train to Zagreb, and from Zagreb you find direct trains to Salzburg.
2) This option is a little more "adventure": take the bus to Split, but get off the bus at the small town of Ploce. This is still Croatia, but the trains that leave Ploce for Zagreb, all run through Bosnia-Herzegovina (including the most exciting towns of Mostar and Sarajevo). This may be a long journey, but the Bosnian landscape is really fantastic, and it isn´t complicated.
