Travel from Budapest to Coast

There are six persons in our party. We plan to do a river cruise on the Danube, ending in Budapest. We would like to add on to the trip by going down to the Adriatic , and traveling north up the coast: Questions- 1. Best and quickest way from Budapest to the coast? 2. Best way to travel up the Dalmatian Coast? I'd appreciate any good advice.

You are not saying when you plan that trip. Time tables are very seasonal. The quickest would be to fly. You are not saying how much time you have for that trip. Depending on available time you can fly to Split or Dubrovnik. Another option would be to go by train to Split. Right now it takes 17 hours with one change in Zagreb. If you go in season I assume the train would be direct and maybe little faster. To travel up the coast: bus, rental car, partially ferry. More buses, more ferries in season.

That's not really an easy task as since Malev Hungarian Airlines closed its become rather difficult to move around the region. There are direct flights to Istanbul if that helps any. I've looked at similar trips for years and I've decided that the train to Zagreb (5 to 7 hours if I remember correctly) and then either bus, rental car or private guide with a car, from Zagreb down the coast to Zagreb. Tough for me to spend the money and time on when I know I can spend time in Romania or Bulgaria at a fraction of the coast and have a wonderful time. You might also consider Slovakia; pretty wonderful any time of the year.

If you are driving, look for roads from Budapest to Ljubljana or Zagreb, and then to the coast. Budapest->Vienna->Salzburg->Ljubljana->Rovinj is one, Budapest->Zagreb->Rovinj/Split another.
