Honestly, the best thing is to rent a car and drive. Driving is easy there, and they have lots of new highways going south -- beautiful views, exciting coastal drives. I like the drive from Rijeka down the coast. Fun to stay in Senj on the way down, then Zadar, Vodice, Sibenik and some of the islands, like Prvic, (ferry departs from Sibenik), see Krka falls, Tribunj, overnight in Trogir, overnight in Split, take ferry to Hvar and Korcula. Nice trip right there. Can extend to take boat to Dubrovnik, too. Can also go inland and see incredible park Plitvice. You can make reservations to stay in Sobe very easily online. If you are not going at the height of tourist season, you can also get a decent room on the spot. When you step off the ferry in Hvar, for example, you are besieged with offers of free rooms and you just go along, ask the price, take a look and if you like it, stay. Many rooms are ensuite situations and very cheap. Croatia is about swimming, beautiful vistas, incredible food, lots of ice cream and sunshine. Great watersports, lots of history. Great place to buy jewelry, too.
