Travel by car in Turkey

As a single female, I am planning to visit Istanbul first. Then, I am wondering if it is advisable to rent a car to tour Turkey for the next 10-12 days.

The answer to your question lies in knowing where you are going. Turkey is very large and you could spend days just driving to your destination. For example, if you are going to Cappadocia, with the affordable costs for air flights, it might make sense to fly there and get your rental car there. That is what we did, then returned the rental car in Izmir and flew back to Istanbul. Some places are many kilometers outside of the nearest town, so you almost need a car to get there. Driving is pretty good, roads are very good to fair in some places, the attention and respect to lines and signs is dependent upon the driver, but it is just fine - easy to do.

I saw Jeff's response and was wondering if anyone can recommend a reliable and affordable company from whom to rent. We plan to pick up a vehicle in Kusedasi and leave it in Ankara.

We used Hertz. The gentlemen we dealt with at pick up and drop off locations spoke english and were very nice and professional. We got a GPS, which was nice, but often could not find the exact location. It got us close and we figured it out from there. We paid less than $70 per day with the GPS and ulimited miles. We've rented from AutoEurope before, but they wanted a $200 drop fee.
