We would like to travel from Venice to Umag, Croatia (58 km South of Trieste). Does anyone know the best way to get there? We are also planning on going from here to Plitvice. Is there a main bus line in Croatia with a website we could visit to answer these questions?
For general information on Croatia, I've found the Croatian National Tourist Board webite www.croatia.hr to be good. It contains links to local websites, like Plitvice. Have been investigating options for getting between Istria and Venice myself. There are seasonal ferries that go from Venice to Umag and then on to Pirin area. Not certain whether they're operated by Venezia Lines or another company. Venezia Lines seasonal ferries run from about the last week of April until about the first week of October. As of this week, 2008 schedules weren't yet posted on their website www.venezialines.com (or may be .it). Much faster than trains or buses. Consider renting a car for trip to Plitvice. Using public transportation, you would probaly need to take a bus to Zagreb and then another bus to Plitvice.
