Transfer from Praha-Holesovice to Old Town at Night

Hi all, my husband and I will be catching a train from Berlin to Prague which arrives at Praha-Holesovice approx 9:30pm. This is our first time to Prague, we are not sure what is the safest and inexpensive way to get from the station to our hotel at Old Town.

Our hotel said that we can catch a metro to Staromestská station and it takes 10 mins to walk there. But I am not sure how safe it is to catch the metro at night, and we may not even have change to put into the vending machine to purchase tickets.

People also mentioned some taxi drivers are dishonest, especially the ones that are at tourist sites and train stations. Anyone has any recommendations?

thanks,
Sonia

Hi Sonia

We arrived in Praha late from Berlin in October. We were able to get local money from a machine but it was big bills and no one wanted to give us change. Other than that, the Metro was VERY easy to use and safe at night (we are sixtyish) and we did usually go out at night. And we did find someone to change to smaller bills to use but there were a lot of people getting off the train in the same boat. I am wondering if it is possible to get a few kroners in Berlin just for when you arrive. That was the only problem we had. Our pensione (Lida) sold us bus/metro passes for each day.

I've traveled a lot on the metro at night and never seen any trouble.

If you are going to be in Prague for a few days it is worth getting a 3 day or 5 day travel pass. These were 330 and 500 kroners respectively when I was last there in May. This gets round the problem of needing small change.

You can certainly get these at the airport and at various central stations so I assume you'll be able to do so at Holesovice, although I've never done so.

Prague is a very lively city at night, I don't think you will be at all unsafe. Just don't linger too long in the small park in front of the main rail station!
