I am thinking about taking a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway, preferably starting in China. I haven't started any formal research - would love tips on how to begin planning and any places that are worth exploring along the way. Thanks!
The first web site to check is this: www.seat61.com/Trans-Siberian.htm Also, there are lots of blogs from other travelers that have done the trip. I just got done reading a book about it: "The Ridiculous Race". I've never done the trip but have done a bit of research on it, there are two types of trains, the expensive Orient Express "land cruise" journey or the regular intercity type trains which are cheaper. Try and rent the DVD movie "Transsiberian" starring Woddy Harrelson and Ben Kingsley. It's a murder/thriller that takes place on the train.
Ellen, for train information check out www.expresstorussia.com Under Trans-Siberian trains it will give you the route and list the stops from Moscow to Vladivostok. Sounds like a great trip, but long: 9259 km, 6 days, 5 hours, 19 minutes. Let me know how it went when you get back.
There is a lot of information on Lonely Planet THorntree forum. I see alot of chat in the Eastern Europe travel board. Looks very interesting but alot of work to get organized. But the people on that forum are very experienced.
