I understand that effective October, 2008, there will no longer be train service between Italy and Croatia. What's a traveler to do?
From where in Italy to where in Croatia are you trying to travel?
We will be flying in to Milan and traveling to Budapest, but wanted to go through Croatia on our way.
Looking at a map, Croatia isn't really on the way to Budapest.
You also haven't told us where in Croatia you intend to go - it is a fairly large country. Are you headed to Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, or somewhere else?
Trains may take quite a long time depending on your destination. Check out if ferries are an option. Try the Jadrolinja website.
The coach services in Croatia are the main way to travel.
I've taken the overnight ferry from Ancona, Italy to Zadar, Croatia and caught a coach to Dubrovnik arriving in the late afternoon. Then back up to Zagreb and into Slovenia (GORGEOUS!!) and to Germany to see friends and onto Hungary.
I think you may be able to connect between Zagreb and Budapest by train, coach or air.
Thank you for all of your replies. After all of the good advice, I think I will rent a car in Milan and drive through the Croatia, Slovania, Hungary, Romania and perhaps Bulgaria. If I can not find an agency that will allow travel to these countries, then antoher plan will be considered.
Thanks again.
When I last rented to drive into E Europe, I took my car from Sixt.com.
I can recommend that agency. A great car and good service at the counter.
Be sure to read the contract carefully before you sign. My first one stipulated that I could NOT drive into E Europe.
When I pointed out that my computer print of the reservation listed a car to be driven into E Europe, they brought me an Opel 4 door diesel with AC,auto trans and all the bells and whistles and only 600 km on the odometer. Be sure to ask for diesel with AC.
You can still get from Milano to Zagreb via train. The cancellation I believe you're referring to is the direct train that went from Venice to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Now you have to travel from Milano or Venice et al north into Austria, and then back south to Slovenia and connect to Zagreb via Ljubljana. I don't know off hand but you can expect the trip to be somewhere from 12-14 hrs. The BEST place to look for route connections is at www.bahn.de .
