How's the railway system in Greece? is it possible to backpack through Greece using train?

Probably not but buses work pretty well. The train system in Greece is practically non-existent. Very limited with a few trains between major cities.

I would only recommend the train for travel between Athens and Kalambaka (The Meteora) and Athens and Thessoloniki. The train can be useful between Athens and Patras, but bus is still better due to the number of express services. Basically bus is the way to travel mainland Greece. They are plentiful, cheap, and go nearly everywhere. The only drawback is the very poor amount of info regarding schedule available on the web.
