Train tickets for Budapest to Vienna

I would like to know if the 4 day tickets that include transport in Vienna are still aviable and what the price is? Do I need to purchase these tickets in advance?

Thanks.

No, not the Vienna card, there is a train ticket you can buy (or could buy) in Budapest that included train travel Budapest to Vienna to Budapest and local transport in Vienna. I don't know if there is a special name for this ticket. Hoping somebody will chime in who has been to these places recently.

I know what you are talking about, and it's called the Vienna Excursion Ticket (there is also a Hungarian name for it). Last I checked in March it cost €31 and was valid for a round trip ticket between Budapest and Vienna within 4 days. It also includes 2 days of public transit in Vienna within a certain zone (the first 2 days of the pass, I believe).

I'm not sure if you can buy it in advance online, but Google will be your friend here.

Good luck!

EDIT: Steve chimed in while I was typing, hence the redundancy.

To add a little information, HERE is a direct link to the official Hungarian rail web page that discusses the Excursion Ticket (it is called kirándulójegy in Hungarian. Now you know why I couldn't remember it). It looks like they also now offer a €25 4-day pass that does not include the 2 days of public transit within Vienna.

By the way, the link above is in Hungarian and Google Translate does a pretty good job... I think.

Yes, thats it. Previously it did include 4 days of travel in Vienna, not 2.

I do not want to purchase the tickets on the internet before I travel to Europe. I need to know if this ticket requires as advance purchase, since I arrive in Budapest two days before I plan on going to Vienna. The earliest I can buy the ticket in person at Budapest's train station is the day I arrive in Budapest.

In that case, and in the event you don't recieve the information for which you seek on this forum, I would head over to TripAdvisor.com and post the question on the Budapest (and/or Vienna) forum. In particular, there is a Destination Expert over there with the handle GCEK who seems to know all the in's and out's of rail travel, specials, etc. in the area. And if you didn't want to post, you could do a search for GCEK and send them (I think 'her,' but I'm not 100% positive) a private message.

Good luck!
